Years after the beginning of a war, halfling Sigrid and her brother are trying to live their lives peacefully. A visit from the Captain of the Palace Guard leads them to become guard trainees. When Sigrid is tasked with protecting the Crown prince from a vigilante group, a mistake gets her charge kidnapped.

 In Sigrid's search for the Prince, the shocking truth about the war comes to light and the mission takes a much more dangerous turn. Sigrid quickly learns just how far the King will go to get what he wants. And worse... the King might not be what he seems.
