Sentenced to a lifetime of labor for crimes of treason committed by a father he never knew, Gabriel Stone grows up in the city of Savronia, working in the kitchens of Lord Redlake and sleeping in the barracks of the City Guard. This life of monotony is ended when Gabriel is sent with the the young and tomboysih Lady Victoria Redlake as part of her entourage to the Redlake summer home. The trip is ambushed by the Family of Rose, the rulers of the neighboring city of Izold, and a war between the two powerful families seems inevitable as armies are mobilized and age-old allies are called upon, threatening the unity of the entire country.
The only survivors on the ambush, Gabriel and Victoria manage to escape the decimation and fend off Izoldite patrols. However, when they run into the path of Ian Storm, the bastard son of an exiled noble, a truth that was not meant to be revealed comes to light as the trio discover the presence of a dark and malevolent player, in the unending game of power, assassination, lies and war, who would want nothing more than all three of them to disappear.
