This story takes place in a game. It isn't about a young man who mysteriously gets sent inside a game or how they become their player character. This is a story about a player character becoming aware and alive, and would break not only his own game but also other games in search of his freedom. A young man buys a new Spirit-like game called, Born of Blood. He has a number of these games, from the original Devil's Spirit to its predecessor Shadow Spirits, as well as, other Spirit-likes.
Several hours into the game, the young man gets pulled away from his game, causing him to die and go back to a checkpoint, so he just left it there. But after a full week, he never returned... He had died in a car accident. His parents locked his room, unable to look at it without crying. However, the game glitched, and the young man's player character respawned but an enemy walks into the room he was in and kills him over and over. A couple of months pass by and the repeated deaths keep going, the player character's normally expressionless face keeps making a fearful look, and his body jerking before the enemy's attack connects.
After his 1889 death, he moves, falling back away from the enemy's attack. He finally got free of his motionless state. It wasn't just him becoming slowly due to the constant resetting, other NPCs and even the more sane enemies have become aware of and have fallen into an existential crisis and confusion. Now this PC, once a normal PC, now travels and breaks his own game, and maybe other games, to find some sort of freedom. Taking up his own name, mixed with the number of his deaths and his given name, Lance #1889
