We always thought the world would end with storms, wars, or hunger. We knew, deep down, that the damage we caused would catch up to us eventually. But we never imagined it would end like this: in roots, shadows, and mist.

I remember watching the forest stretch its roots across the land, devouring everything in its path. It didn't stop. It just kept growing deeper, darker, and more alive with every passing day.

But it wasn't just growing. It was changing. And everything inside it began to transform.

Creatures emerged from the shadows. Some looked like animals until you noticed the bent limbs and the unnatural skin. Others moved like they used to be human. The more the forest grew, the more they twisted into something we couldn't name. Couldn't understand.

Half the planet disappeared before we even realized what was happening.

We told ourselves isolation would protect us. We were so sure of that. But I don't think I believe it anymore.

Yesterday morning, we found a handprint. It was pressed into the outside of the dome like a warning. Today, there's another. And now... people are starting to vanish. No screams. No signs. Just silence. And more handprints.

Whatever's out there hasn't stopped. This feels like the beginning of something worse.

No one ever knows the whole story... Nestled deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, something is emerging. Kept in absolute secrecy, it seeps into a fading town, quietly shared from person to person. For Alden Bensen, a directionless high school graduate, this discovery could mean an escape from his empty existence. To Rachel DuValle, perpetually underestimated and dismissed by the world, magic represents a chance to become something much greater than herself. In the face of an unsuspecting world, their decisions shape the growth of a budding society discovering untold power. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever - or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. ----- The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series. It's been five years since the plague struck. Leah knows there are other survivors, but she's avoiding them. She is doing just fine on her own. Surviving after everyone she knew died has made her physically strong and honed her intelligence, but she is emotionally devastated. There is nothing to fear if you don't make yourself emotionally vulnerable. James has spent the last five years helping to build up a colony of survivors. He believes in the small town they have populated and its mission to save humanity from extinction. He and his small team of men find scattered people and bring them in. Over the last two centuries, women have fought for and won more and more rights, gaining equality with men. Society, law, and technology bolsters and enforces these rights, but now they are gone. Women's equality with men is over. There are just too few of them. They aren't lesser but greater, more important, more valuable than men. Men are expendable. Men can stay outside alone if they like, but all women must be brought inside the safety of the Colony and properly taken care of. James has been searching the area Leah lives in. Her time of solitude is up. Leah sparks something in James he's never felt before. He's not letting this one get away, certainly not twice.
