what are the chances?

What could possibly go wrong in a novel about two childhood best friends who grew up despising one another and view each other as enemies? What has changed?

Arcadia, the same as Scaramouche, makes everything competitive, as in he can convert a bet into a competitive sports game. As usual, they compete, but their disagreements are becoming too childish.
They are also academic rivals.

Scaramouche regards Arcadia as "someone who thinks she's superior to anybody else" despite her intelligence and beauty.

Scaramouche had the appearance and popularity, but Arcadia saw him as "the one who thinks he's higher and above than everyone else."

Could this change?
