Every 50 years or so, when the crisp frost of spring melts into summer, the high courts from Osteria to Albanie host the Festival of the Sovereign Cities in the great principality of Aegorod. Six citizens are chosen from across the land to act as stand-in's for the Kings and Queens of Beaumont, an honor in and of itself. As the festivities commence in a summer long race to accomplish as much as these simulated royals possible can before their "reign" is up, they find the harsh reality of ruling Beaumont to be far less favorable than they had imagined. 

From the wars that wage behind closed doors, to the treason that is played out in the politics of everyday life, these 6 have the chance to leave the kingdom better than they found it. But when the true kings and queens return to their thrones at the end of the festival, will they continue to maintain the changes that have been made? When the chosen 6 find themselves in the midst of a divinity driven battle, pushed by the baronial siblings whose common ground on the belief of the Gods of Old is shattered by earthquakes and famine, they are forced to bring an end to the hardships of their people, because their true kings and queens will not.
