Dimitri Bardot had never known an easy life. From angry foster homes to apathetic orphanages, Dimitri soon learned that if she was to survive, she'd have to do it alone.

Three years into her career as a police officer, Dimitri was asked on one of the biggest cases her tiny station had ever seen. Panic. Convulsing fear. Bloody brutality. The killer brought all three to their town, keeping every officer awake for hours, sending detectives to chase a ghost in the dark.

She never expected the violence would find her. Hanging captive, the noose unyielding as it gripped her neck, a pool of her own blood tormenting reflections of horror-filled eyes.

Months pass. Scar tissue begins to form, ever so slowly. A Selection is announced. Dimitri is convinced to apply, where she is whisked away to the castle, yanked from everything familiar, hiding her many scars with long sleeves and silence.

But the killer isn't finished with her yet. Even with people standing behind her, including her entire small town police force behind one face, Dimitri fears that when it comes down to it, she'll be facing him... alone.
