In the deep and ancient forest, many miles outside the highly religious Settlement, lives Eden, a girl who can see and communicate with Wandering Souls- troubled spirits that haunt the area.
She has lived alone for five years after Cassia, her caretaker, died. But in an interruption to her grief-filled, yet peaceful, life, she is forced into helping the Settlement solve their issue with the Wanderers- they are viciously haunting the town. Hugo, a boy whose past is deeply intertwined with Eden's, seems to be the only one she can trust. Together, they search for the cause of the haunting. But as she learns more about the Settlement and her own past with it, she starts to question the town's beliefs and her new family's safety in it.
