Eli and Rachel VanZantan had a normal life in Lawrence Kansas. They had two daughters, Betty who was 5 years old, and then Norma was six months old. They lived next door to their best friends, the Winchesters, and they even had kids on the same day. May 2nd. Sam was born at 12:01 a.m. and Norma was born at 3:39 a.m.

the seemed like it was doomed from the start to end tragically, and it did. on the night of November 2nd, Rachel and her daughters were staying with the Winchesters because Eli was on a hunting trip and Rachel didn't want to be alone., it wasn't a problem, they were regular visitors to each other's houses and didn't even lock the back doors.

but later that night John found Mary and Rachel in the nursery both pinned above Sam and Norma's cribs. Dean and Betty ran out of the house house with their younger siblings, and later that night John had to tell Eli that his wife was dead.
