What is Dementia?

A common neurological illness that affects the brain and gets worse over time is dementia. It causes a number of neuropsychiatric symptoms as well as progressive cognitive and functional deterioration. According to estimates, there are around 55 million dementia sufferers worldwide, and each year, 10 million new cases are reported. According to the WHO, 78 million cases of dementia are anticipated in 2030 and 139 million in 2050. The majority of dementia cases occur in low- and middle-income nations, where there is a greater burden due to ineffective healthcare services. Among all diseases, it is also one of the most common causes of mortality.

Alzheimer's, vascular dementia, Lewy body, and frontotemporal dementia are just a few examples of the many diverse types of dementia. The most prevalent type of dementia, accounting for 60-70% of cases, is Alzheimer's. Dementia symptoms are rarely seen in people under the age of 50, but after that age, the prevalence doubles every five years. According to Arvanitakis et al. (2019), dementia is not a normal part of aging but may affect up to one-third of people aged 85 and older.re just a few examples of the many diverse types of dementia.
