Harry just saved Ginny from dying in the Chamber of Secrets at the cost of his vision - Basilisk venom and blood got in his eyes and Phoenix Tears weren't administered quickly enough to stave off the damage. Ginny finds the Sorting Hat and puts it on because it is the only way to carry it ... what with having to guide Harry now, and there's the sword and the diary to manage as well.
