It has been a hundred years since Carlisle Cullen a Doctor came across a young man named Edward and his mother dying of the Spanish influenza. His mother was in a very bad way and most likely would not make it through the night. She confronted Carlisle and told him she knew what he was and as her last dying wish made him promise to save her son, even if it meant turning him into a vampire so he did the only thing he could do and followed through on his promise.
