Despite the relentless punishment, Everette refuses to accept the Unity's version of reality, believing there is a greater truth beneath the surface. Maddie, has always been a compliant citizen, never questioning the rules or the world around her. But when she's drawn into Everette's secretive world of resistance, she begins to awaken to the realization that she, too, is a freethinker-though she's never allowed herself to see it. As Everette helps her unlock the power of her own questioning mind, Maddie begins to challenge everything she once believed, gradually discovering her own strength in the face of tyranny.
