The Weight of Grief
It's almost funny. How grief sneaks up on you. One second, you're fine; you're coping well and then it hits you like a bullet, tearing right through your heart, almost killing you on the spot. Grief is a monster that lies dormant in the darkest quarters of your mind, growing stronger and stronger until you can't fight anymore. Until you can't breathe. Peter was fractured. The monster having grown too big, and without any support left to hold him up, the world of drugs dug its claws into him. And it was slowly killing him, like a sickly sweet poison that dulled the pain while quietly feeding on his soul. He was powerless to stop it. He was too tired to stop it. Tony was doing pretty good. Aside from having died, he was doing pretty good. Resurrected from the dead, check. Thanos dead, check. Wife and daughter thriving, check. He'd never expected to get his life back, that was for sure. He was thankful for the second chance. Unfortunately, Tony was quick to discover that the kid had all but lost his own life. It felt like a knife slowly twisting into his chest every time he saw the kid: in agony. Now Tony wasn't exactly the poster-child for a good emotional support figure, but he wasn't about to sit back and let this continue. No matter how hard the kid fought him, no matter how much resistance he was met with, Tony would help the kid. Still, he couldn't help the fear that laced his blood. "Who's this?" Spiderman points to an old polaroid on my desk. I glance at it, before going focusing back on Spider's shoulder, "Just a boy I was friends with in high school. He kinda just disappeared after his girlfriend died though." "Oh. Were you close?" I shrugged, the old feeling of bitterness reentering my heart after so many years. "I would have called us best friends, but I guess not close enough for him to want my help." "I'm sure he just didn't want to hurt you." "Whatever, I'm over it." "You still have his picture." "I said I'm over it, Spiderboy! He left, he's not my friend anymore! Not like you won't do the same thing when you leave here tonight. I helped you, and now you have no use for me. Just like Peter." ------ You used to be best friends with Peter Parker. That was until he met Gwen Stacy and fell in love. And when she died due to a freak accident, Peter left you for good. You were on your own now, and you preferred it that way. No one was going to hurt you now, you just had to get through med school and you'd be a-okay. At least so you thought. Exactly five years after the death of Gwen Stacy you find a beaten-up Spiderman laying on your porch. He could barely get out a word before you led him into your apartment and helped him clean up. The route to school was familiar, a blur of sidewalks and crosswalks. I cut through an alleyway- a shortcut I'd taken countless times before, despite the uneasy vibe it gave me. I've seen too much in alleyways to feel completely at ease, but desperate times call for desperate measures, right? At first, it was fine. I hurdled my bag over the wire fence that bisected the alley and started climbing. But then it hit me- that subtle hum at the back of my skull. My spider-sense. It started as a whisper, a soft ring of caution. But in seconds, it swelled into a deafening alarm. My hand gripped the top of the fence, my neck craning to glimpse whatever was behind me. Then, before I could process the danger, I felt it-a sharp, familiar sting. A taser. Pain shot through me, and my muscles locked as if every nerve was set ablaze. My thoughts scattered, but one thing remained clear: I freakin hate tasers. My body went limp, falling gracelessly to the cold, unforgiving concrete. One month has passed since Tony made the ultimate sacrifice to give up his life in order to save countless others. Things have more or less gotten back on track as the world starts to heal and recover now that everyone has been returned. The process it taking a little longer for Peter Parker, who still feels lost amidst it all, not fully processing the fact that Tony is gone. Cue shocking timing! A field trip! Cause those always go so great for Peter, and it's to Stark Industries no less, on the anniversary of Tony's death! But with some convincing words from Pepper and the promise of some sort of 'surprise' that Tony had planned, Peter agrees to go. Little does he know things aren't going to go as planned. PTR Arachnid 24601, now known as Peter Parker, was stolen away from his parents at the young age of two. HYDRA kidnapped him, experimenting on him and turning him into an enhanced human assassin with abilities akin to a spider. Peter grew up surrounded by nothing but pressuring dim halls and voices tearing through his consciousness like bullets to his head. He never thought he'd get a chance at freedom. There was no he'd see the world outside of the missions that were mostly wiped from his memory. But when the base is under attack one day, he finds himself suddenly thrust into the real world, alongside the opportunity to reconnect with an old friend. Cover art does not belong to me. Hi. I've been doing this long enough that im changing the old description of this story, so welcome! This is a collection of one shots about none other than Peter Parker. It follows him in many situations, kidnapping, sickness, daily life, etc. I like to write a lot of sick fics (of a wide variety) so if you read this be aware that Peter is sick more often than not. I will always put a trigger warning at the top of chapters where it may apply (please comment if I need to add a warning that I may have forgotten). I will not write smut. I continue to not own marvel, which continues to be unfortunate. This is marked as complete, but I might add chapters in the future.
