Maera Targaryen, the eldest daughter of Laena Velaryon and the Rogue Prince Daemon, grew up without a dragon just as her cousin Aemond did. And as much as her father loved her, he could not help but resent her a small amount because of it. And because of Daemon's miniature amount of dislike for the girl, Maera grew closer to her grandsire Corlys, who taught her everything he knew about Westeros, sailing, and the oceans.

After Aemond loses his eye and after both Laena and Laenor's deaths, Corlys demands that Maera comes with him during his travels across the Seven Kingdoms, and Daemon was hesitant but happy to accept.

But seven years later, when both Maera and Corlys are injured after an attack on their ship, Corlys hears word of Vaemond's attempt to become heir of Driftmark, and sends his granddaughter to Kings Landing, supposedly for her safety. Although the true reason, as he had informed his wife Rhaenys through a letter, was that he wanted Driftmark to pass down to Maera.

During her stay in Kings Landing, Prince Aegon Targaryen develops a high fascination in the first-born Targaryen daughter, and as much as Maera hates to admit it, she can't help but think that maybe there's more underneath the surface of Viserys' first-born son than he lets on.
