"You think this makes you a true Targaryen?" Aemond twists the only streak of pale blonde on Nessa's hair, in a tutting manner he continued, "It's pathetic. If what you want is to be recognized as a Targaryen...all you have to do is marry me."

When the throne is usurped by an inadequate King, Nessa knows where her loyalties lie. In the endless war, forbidden love rises and she worries it'll stand in the way of giving Rhaenyra her full support. So she leaves Aemond... wifeless...

As the rest of her family meet their bitter end at the hands of the Greens, Nessa takes the name Targaryen and returns to avenge what was taken from her family only to find Aemond Targaryen sitting on the Iron Throne.

Yet, the now King Viserys I Targaryen appointed his daughter, Rhaenyra Targaryen as his heir. The Seven Kingdoms had already rejected a woman, they would do it again. When the King remarried, his wife gave him a son, his council advised him to name him heir but he never did. The King didn't know then he would lead his realm to a war remembered as the Dance of Dragons.

They would not be there to keep each other safe, and the fire they had burning within them would slowly be snuffed out.
