Dr. Donald Sonn is a veteran urologist who has been practicing at the Urology Group of Western New England since 1997. He received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University, is the recipient of a number of honors and awards, including the Excellence in Teaching award from the Tufts University School of Medicine in 2004.
When he isn't practicing medicine, Dr. Donald Sonn enjoys sitting down with his vintage Martin 000-R acoustic steel string guitar. He is an accomplished player who often performs finger-style, meaning he does not use a pick, but plucks the strings with his fingers and thumb. One of his favorite tunes is called "Classical Gas," a Grammy Award-winning, hit song for guitarist and composer Mason Williams back in 1969. Written in the style of a classical guitar piece, "Classical Gas" is a challenging tune that Dr. Sonn plays well.
Dr. Donald Sonn recorded "Classical Gas" and posted a video of his performance on the Internet. Viewers have been impressed. "Great job!" one commented. "I learned this song myself this summer; it took all summer. I know what goes into learning it and you've done a great job!"
As accomplished as the performance was, the guitar Dr. Donald Sonn played it on drew almost as much attention. Martin has discontinued the 000-R, but the guitar has its enthusiasts who get excited about its features. It has a laminated rosewood 000-size body and a solid spruce top, with black body binding, single herringbone ring around the sound hole, a low profile neck, and a rosewood fret board with pearl dot markers.
