As a kid, Mason was just trying to deal with the struggles of moving, the loss of his mother, and his alcoholic father at such a young age. The only time he had to escape was when he was at school, where he could read and pretend to be sword-fighting pirates or living with aliens in outer space versus the stress of life. He was so alone, until he met Zelda.
They grow to rely on one another, until they get separated before the summer preceding high school. While separated their worlds completely change, and when Zelda returns to see her old friend, she does not like what she sees.
Going undercover as the new girl "Jessie", Zelda hopes to rediscover the true Mason underneath his new popular facade. Will she be able to return him into the boy whom she once loved? Or will the superficiality completely take him over?
