Asher Noble's only goal in his young life since his parents' deaths has been to put food on the table for his three younger siblings, even if that means committing small acts of theft. The small family is getting by okay until the day Asher is caught by officers. But instead of throwing the teenage boy in jail, they are so impressed by his near get-away that they make him a deal; Train for the city's military force or face the death penalty.
The school seems innocent enough as Asher befriends the commander's daughter, Baylee, and the Irish librarian, Jay Mick. But a sudden discovery of a hidden passage throws him into the world of the Book Smugglers, a community plagued by deception. And the Smugglers seem to know more about Asher and his past then he himself does.
