WHAT IS A DONUT?

When asked to draw a donut or doughnut, most likely you'll sketch something that looks like a ring. When people think of donuts, they often think of sweet rings made of fried dough. Although this is the most popular type, it is not the only one. Donuts can be made from deep-fried dough but they don't have to be ring-shaped or sweet. They can be sweet, like Indian vada and Ukrainian pampushki, or they can resemble Spanish churros. Donuts with fruit preserves are just as common as the ring-shaped ones.

Smaller balls of fried dough, however, are called drop donuts and donut holes. Although donuts are most commonly made from flour dough, they can also be made using other types of batter.
