The Story Behind the Slipper
We all know the classic story of a girl who lost her glass slipper running away from her dreams, and racing back to her sad reality of being a peasant maid for her own step-mother and step-sisters, the only family she has left. Yes, this is a story based on none other than the character of Cinderella. However...this rendition of telling the tale is quite different. This quick-read is all written in the form of haikus; a form of poetry that is written in a 5/7/5 syllable count. In this story, you learn about the lives these characters really lived behind the scenes of the happily ever after that we all know to be. You'll discover rich amounts of character development from minor characters and learn major mic-drops about the major characters. I hope you enjoy reading and visualizing the lives of various characters and what they may have been thinking throughout this story! Elunara tilted her chin upward, forcing their eyes to meet. "So... you're the one I'm meant to marry?" she asked, her voice smooth like honey laced with venom. Her eyes roamed over Liora's face, slow and deliberate. Liora knew she should answer. Knew silence might be taken as disrespect. But this woman-goddess-like in beauty, terrifying in presence-had stolen the words right from her throat. Elunara smirked, leaning in close enough that Liora could feel the warmth of her breath. She traced a finger along Liora's bottom lip, eyes flicking down with unsettling intent. "I don't bite, darling," she whispered huskily. A pause. Sweet Dreams: A Modern Fairytale
This is inspired by a writing project I supervised when I worked with an elementary student. This writing project was a group project to make their own spin on a fairy tale assigned to the group. It had to have all the main points of their fairy tale, start and and with the common phrases of a fairy tale, and it had to have their own creative spin. My student did Cinderella, and it was so fun to work with him and his group, I wanted to make my own. Our dear Cinderella loves to bake, but she's not exactly looking for love when an opportunity to make a name for herself comes up. As for Prince Charming, he is looking for love, just not in the usual fairy tale fashion. And as usual, there's some extra mischief from the step family, royal family, and fairy godmother. But in this story, Ella has been replaced by Elliot and her beloved prince is a princess severely lacking in charm. Elliot's step-father expects him to work from dawn until dusk, leaving him no time to miss the life of happiness and comfort he once knew. When the rest of his family are invited to a series of balls, held in honour of the Princess Charmaine's return from school, Elliot longs for a night off and the opportunity to reconnect with his childhood friend. But his step-father is busy plotting how his own son can win Charmaine's heart and doesn't want Elliot getting in the way. They will soon discover that Charmaine won't be easily charmed. She doesn't need a husband to rule by her side and she's going to use these balls to prove it.
