The story begins in Season 4, Episode 22 of The Vampire Diaries-the night the veil drops and the dead can return to speak with the living.
Elena has her humanity back. She's standing at her brother's grave, hoping-praying-to see Jeremy.
Someone does appear. But it isn't Jeremy. It's someone with unfinished business. Someone from the Other Side.
Kol Mikaelson.
The Original vampire stands before her, very much dead... and very much real. Elena expects anger. Revenge. Violence. After everything that happened between them, she knows she deserves it.
But Kol doesn't kill her. And that changes everything. Because the real question isn't what will happen now.
It's why he chose to spare her in the first place.
