There wasn't a creature in the entire multiverse quite like Nightmare. Most viewed him as an insane overlord high on power, but he radiated far too much calculation and control for blind madness to be the cause of his personality. No, he was smart. Incredibly so. He best be, as he ran an entire kingdom of misery and suffering just out of reach from the universe's nosey "Saviors."
Cross had a difficult time deciphering his master's intentions. One may argue that he had no choice in being the ravenous king he is now, but that life had forced him down the path long ago for the sake of feeding. That's what this is all for after all. The pain and suffering. It was to feed the king. Cross couldn't despise him for such a basic necessity, no matter how foreign the concept and how often hunger turned the king's attention his way.

Unwanted protection
Everyone knows the Star Sanses: they're the Guardians of the Multiverse, and protect it from Nightmare and his minions, who only want to spread chaos and destruction. They're kind, strong, brave, the good guys! How can you not love them? You can't. They deserve the world. They're perfect and selfless and precious, and must be protected at any (and I do mean ANY) cost. Not that they couldn't protect themselves, of course! It's just, the Multiverse doesn't give them the appreciation and respect they deserve, not really. But Nightmare, Error, Horror, Killer, Dust, Cross... they know how much Dream, Ink and Blue are worth. And they'll keep them safe. Forever. Hopelessly Devoted To You (Crossmare)
He had been serving 'the one who takes' for quite some years. Most of the creatures in the batches of new recruits either died or betrayed their king. But Cross would never do that. The god had given him a home, friends, a new purpose, a second chance at life to prove his worth. In exchange Cross served him, stayed by his side, devoted his life to him in such a manner that it almost could be called worshiping. He was a god, afterall. Cross knew he would do anything for Nightmare. He'd kill for him, had killed for him, he'd protect him, even die for him. And if that couldn't be achieved, well, then he'd die with him.
Break the cycle
The Multiverse for a long time has been an endless loop. Both inside the AUs and in itself. Error and Ink making a truce then breaking it in any possible way. The Dreamtale twins fight until Nightmare dies and Dream sacrifices his soul to plant a new tree of Feelings recreating a cycle. But, among everyone, there is one person who remembers each loop that took place and after a few centuries of trying to figure out what to do, he finally got it. He will break those endless cycles and try to finally give the Multiverse some peace. This is the story of that attempt.
