Being seen as a threat to make her stop her from thinking she could do anything her parents were killed in front of her- there heads chopped off and there blood splashed on to her little face . then as they were about to kill her as well zuko stepped up still only about six or so and said 
''Can I keep her?'' Seeing as the little girl was damaged enough they gave her to him .

After accepting they started to travel together. When Zuko starts to fall in love with her what would he do when he finds out she's a water bender.
