8-year-old Chloe must deal with the fact that her parents abandoned her. As new people get infected every day, the infection rate grows. Survivors kill each other for materials. Some die in the process. Chloe was on her own until she made new friends and later grew up together. As she grows, she uncovers new things, forms new relationships, and figures out the first rule of survival is to trust no one.
