Quinn is an introverted teenager who has enjoyed being alone ever since the disappearance of his mother when he was nine. Well, mostly alone. He hangs out with his best friend, Andrew. One night Andrew drags Quinn onto an alien spaceship that lands in his backyard. Quinn and Andrew find themself in an unexpected situation when the two of them find themselves stranded on Mars. They're introduced to a world totally different than their own. New friendships are made, secrets are revealed, and relationships are strained.

If the extraterrestrials go too long without Qi, people on the alien planet will die. However, when Qi is extracted from Earth, the weak and elderly of Earth will die. The beacon can only be activated by the alien who was left here and only when the planets are in a particular alignment. The next time is only two months away during the Autumnal Equinox. When Zoe discovers who the alien is, it's a complete game changer because the alien is closer to her than she ever could have imagined. The story takes place in a small town surrounded by forest near the Oregon-California border. Of course it does, after all, the highest concentration of Qi is found in forests where ancient redwoods grow. You might be wondering, what is Qi? In Japan it is called "ki," and in India, "prana"." The ancient Egyptians referred to it as "ka," and the ancient Greeks as "pneuma." In Africa, it's known as "ashe" and in Hawaii as "mana." Qi, Prana, Ki, call it what you will, this energy is the life force itself.

I wasn't special, I wasn't a marine or a scientist sent here from earth to study Pandora, I was a behaviorist-some say behaviorists are scientists too; but the brain isn't made up of mathematics and hope, it's like the roots of trees. Forever speaking but unheard. I study people's brains and their behavior. I don't look at it with hope and faith. I'm nothing special, not really. Venus isn't exactly a perfect paradise, Max knows, but it's much better than staying on Mars and listening to their parents argue all summer. Upon arrival in Marigold City, Max discovers that their extended family has taken in two kids their age off the streets - Kiffa, a tech-genius Zomai looking to use gadgets to fit in at school, and Azadri, a very self conscious Evior who believes she's too alien for her mostly-human peers. Sebastian, being a Hybrid, easily made friends with the two misfits, and the three of them became Cloud Nine Academy's playground menaces. Max, being 100% human, wants to make friends with their cousin's new gang, but they find themself feeling unworthy as they've never once felt they don't fit in. So, the only logical thing is to convince the trio that they're a misfit too. That shouldn't be too hard, should it?
