It has been twenty-five years since magic reappeared on the continent, and sixteen years since everyone learned why mages must never go to war. But Ken Vale doesn't worry about these things. He hadn't been born when his mother snuck them out of the Arnab desert, where their people are immune to magic. He doesn't pray to her ancestral spirits, or believe her bedtime stories about griffins, the divine beasts that shape everyones' fates. Ken knows his destiny, and it's studying music in the Capitol.

So when both magic and ghosts upend his life, Ken draws the attention of mages and governments alike. And his search for answers will change the course of magic for all who have it.

But first, those feathery powers-that-be wish to have a word with him.
