Sootface is uneager to have his own apprentice. The experience of molding a young cats mind is fruitless, he thinks, whatever the other Warrior Mentors may say. It is simply a waste of his time.

Yet he cannot refuse his leader when (out of the blue) he's assigned one. Unhappy but willing, Sootface tries (with little patience) to teach young Doepaw of his world- and is quickly surprised at how much he's rubbed off on her, and even more disturbingly, how much they've rubbed off on each other. A sudden threat then looms over ThunderClan's prosperity, and it seems the two cats need each other now more than ever. 

This is a simple story of love and torment, and how a small and inspired apprentice can melt an old Warriors heart.
