He pulled back quickly and slapped me hard across my face with the back of his hand. I groaned in pain, tears springing to my eyes. I kept them closed long enough to regain my composure.
"Don't test me," he warned. "The nicest thing I can give you is another black eye."
"What a gentleman," I replied through gritted teeth and I spit more blood at his feet. He growled in anger, pulling his fist back to hit me again. Suddenly the sound of three gunshots rang out in the hallway and the man looming above me froze. The door burst open and the perpetrator was looking down the barrel of a gun.
