They called it the solitude. The moment when all fifty states established independent governments and blocked off access to the outside world. People can no longer see the oceans or the beaches that meet them. Some of these territories live in growth and prosperity beyond belief. Others, however, are stricken with grief, famine, war, and despair. Within these separated worlds, live four teenagers with very different lives. Yet, none of them are fulfilled. Whether it be the return of a loved one, wealth, or freedom, they all need something. These goals seem unreachable, until one night, when a black envelope appears in their rooms that prompts them to make a wish. Little do they know, they must be willing to die for it.

It was a normal day before everything went up in flames. A nature research facility exploded, covering the town in a thick cloud of purple smoke, turning every bug and insect into giant mutants out for blood. People ran every which way as the world we once knew went down in flames. Blood filled the streets as the ones left only watched in horror as their loved ones got eaten alive. Five groups of survivors-that's all that was left of the once overflowing town. The new Humanity group, the new government and law enforcers. God's Saviours, the ones who think they are chosen by God himself to create a new world. Mother Nature's group they are the ones planting new crops, living off the gifts Mother Nature provides for them. Scavengers, the protectors, the ones not afraid to stand face to face with danger. They kill the mutants and go outside the gates to collect stuff from the outside world. Then there are the Traders; they buy stuff from the Scavengers, trading it with the other groups for other goods. If you want something, ask them and they will get it for you, but only for the right price. They try and build a semi-normal life. Or will this fragile new order be built on the same vicious power structures that defined the old world, the one that was controlled by the mafia? However, before Mikael can experience his newly found happiness, he dies in a bicycle accident. Yet he, too, is given a new chance. A new life, a mission, a floating paradise, and a distant dream of an island. But this is where things start taking a very different course. When Mikael finally finds his island, he also finds out that the world is not what he had previously thought of it, and the strange youngsters on the island are not who they first seemed. Eventually, Mikael might even find himself, but to reach that end, he needs an entire journey, which always seems to be only in the beginning when a new turn again derails him.
