Orren Randolphus and his friends Haxel the goblin and Marett the heiress, have escaped from Lord Berthus's army and the equally bloodthirsty Drammite cult. Their escape, however, was narrow and nearly got them killed, and to make matters worse, the trio is now lost in the Forest of Doom. This impenetrable and stunningly beautiful jungle has a blood-curdling, bone-chilling reputation as the home of terrible monsters from the distant past. Orren must somehow find a way for himself and his friends to make it out and continue their quest for the six magical gwellen. Even if they do manage to escape, they will have to cross Rivulein, a treacherous land where the Drammite cult is slowly taking over, and then they will have to find a way over tall, snow-covered mountains. Meanwhile, Lord Berthus and the Drammites might have been foiled, but by no means have they been stopped, and they are still in pursuit. As if all of this weren't bad enough, it appears that there could be yet other enemies who desire the gwellen and the powers they contain for themselves. Throughout Orren's struggle, he is haunted by the message of a dream, which states that if he can't find a sanctuary for the stones--a safe place where they will forever be out of the reach of those who want to abuse their powers--then all of his and his friends' efforts will be in vain. The quest seems hopeless, for truly everywhere, foes lurk.
