it's been nearly 3 years since mike and will have laid eyes on each other, been near each other. not since the byers clan moved to california right before high school. will, who has been at an all boys independent school in california, and mike, who has been back at the same old hawkins, sharing the pang of missing each other and the letters they've written to each other non stop. that is until will wrote to mike saying he'd be back in hawkins the entire summer before their senior year, and it'd been arranged between parents that the byers boy would be staying at the wheeler house.
