In Nico's world, everybody gets assigned a color at birth. There are purples, reds, blues, oranges, yellows, pinks, etc. And the color he was stationed: black. Your color gets decided by the mark you are born with. It's most typically the color of your mother and father. The mark represents your color. Once your color is assigned, you get sent off to be with your colors. That color forever controls your life.
You must live in your color, wear your color, eat your color, and most importantly, only form relationships- romantic and platonic- with your color. If you break any rules involving your color, you will be punished. These punishments can be getting publicly humiliated to being executed.
Yet Nico still loved Will. He still loved the person he was forbidden to love, knowing all well the consequences.

Nico always hid. He hid in the strawberry fields because people wouldn't usually walk into his place in them. They were too big for that. Will, however, sees him walking into them with a happy meal, and follows him. Can will chip away at the walls Nico put up? And would Will survive being punished for breaking a promise? Or would Will die? Would will have the guts to be able to get past the bullies at camp, to save someone that didn't like him back? Can he save Nico? His eyes narrowed at the blond, maybe after sneaking a glance at his ridiculously thin body in an even more ridiculous school uniform that hung off his bones. "Well, that's none of your business and-" Nico panicked for a moment as he searched his wrist, then tried following the teacher's instructions, until he felt the gentle thrum of life underneath his finger. "There! I d-have one." "Really?" Will grabbed his hand (okay, so it was less grabbing and more of a gentle grazing of his fingers against Nico's wrist) and oh. His eyes blew wide, and his heart pounded in his ears. Why did I let him do that? What do I do with my hand now? Can he feel how fast my heart is going? Nico di Angelo is finally happy. He's learning to accept himself for his sexuality and as a son of Hades. After everything horrible that has happened to him, he's slowly getting better with the help of Will and his friends. Will Solace finally got the boy of his dreams. The boy he had a crush on since he was 11 years old. He's starting to realize that he isn't as useless as he thinks he is, and that he's actually worth something. Everything is going great for a while. But just like it always is for demigods, nothing good ever lasts. The death of Nico's first and closest friend Jason Grace puts a sudden end to the sunshine that currently brightens Nico's life for once. His death triggers a lot of things for him, and shines light on a lot of his unresolved trauma. Will Nico be able to make it through this without his mental stability completely breaking once and for all? Will Nico be able to let people in enough to help him get through it? And what about the mysterious dreams that Nico keeps having of his mom? And who really is this little girl that knows nothing about her past? In this sequel to Out of the Shadows, Nico sees familiar faces and revisits past places, but at least this time he has Will along for the ride. But now they've been dating for over a year and half, and due to unfortunate circumstances, Nico even lives with the Solaces. Will can't keep these parts of his life separate so he decides that they'll be able to hide Nicos vampireism from his family so that way they can all meet. or: Nico is a vampire and Wills family hates monsters. He brings Nico to meet his family anyways so they have to hide the fact that Nico is a vampire from them. Shit hits the rocks as expected.
