Wei Ying, the son of Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze, the second in command of Yunmeng Jiang Sect, grew up traveling the cultivation world with his parents. His grandfather, Immortal Boashen Sanren, was a renowned cultivator known for his powerful abilities.

Lan Zhan, also known as Lan Wangji, was the son of Madam Lan and Qingheng-jun, the current sect leader of Gusu Lan Sect. He had a brother, Lan Huan, with the courtesy name of Lan Xichen or Zewu Jun.

Wei Ying and Lan Zhan's paths crossed when they were both attending a cultivation conference hosted by the Yunmeng Jiang Sect. Wei Ying was immediately drawn to Lan Zhan's quiet and reserved nature, and Lan Zhan was similarly intrigued by Wei Ying's free-spirited and adventurous attitude.
