North Carolina, 1968. Alexandra Hathaway is twenty-eight, no plans to marry or settle down, and is happy with her career as a private school history teacher, with her three brothers, their wives, and children for company. Fiercely independent, she and her younger brother, Toby, were adopted by their uncle, the older brother of their father, and his wife, during the outbreak of World War Two when their parents were killed. Alexandra likes her life, but something has been missing.

North Carolina, 1766. Lord John Grey is visiting his comrades, Jamie and Claire Fraser, on their estate of Fraser's Ridge. However, he ends up upon Ocracoke Island and goes through the stones by mistake. Now two hundred years in the future, what is Lord John to do?

Alexandra and Lord John come together when their lives are faced with a turning point. No one believes Alexandra when she says she heard buzzing around the stones, and no one else believes Lord John when he says he traveled through time. How will they get Lord John home, and, in the end, will he even wish to return home?
