'I resigned myself to the fact that I had about ten seconds to reach the exit.
Meanwhile, Silent Johann had recovered from his dismay at my daring to mock his disability and followed me amidst oratorical curses.
"You've done well," I thought.
At this point I could have run out the door, up the road and into the Ford, only to find tyre marks and a cloud of dust outside, but I refused to bow down again. If I'm destined to be beaten to death by some rabid idiot in the Elysium tonight, I'll take it with dignity.
But in the end, fate turned against my executioner.
Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a heavy bottle of drink on one of the tables. I grabbed it by the neck and with the force with which I turned, I smashed it on the head of Silent Johann, who was just within striking distance.
The man stiffened, his eyes wide with surprise and pain. Immediately, a two-finger wide, dark red gash appeared on his forehead, and then suddenly his whole face was flooded with blood. The big, sturdy fellow collapsed like a slaughtered ox. His head cracked horribly on the sticky tiles.
With stoic calm, I bent down and pulled my hundred francs from his vest pocket.
"It won't be money that gives you headaches for a while, my friend," I whispered in his ear.
His astonished eyes went blank and I managed to step away just before the thick, dark pool growing around his head reached my shoes.' - Raymund, 15 April 1921.
