تثبت المنظمات الحاصلة على شهادة أيزو 14001 التزامها بالمسؤولية البيئية، فضلاً عن احترام اللوائح الدولية والوطنية. تقدم شهادة أيزو 14001 أكثر من مجرد الامتثال التنظيمي وتلبية متطلبات الموردين، بل يمكنها أيضًا مساعدة المؤسسات في توفير التكاليف المتعلقة بالبيئة. الإصدار الحالي من ايزو 14001 هو ايزو  14001: 2015، والذي تم نشره في سبتمبر 2015. يساعد الحصول على شهادة أيزو 14001 المؤسسات على بناء الثقة، فضلاً عن تحسين سمعتها ومصداقيتها من خلال إظهار التزامها بالمسؤولية البيئية. تم تصميم المعيار الدولي لنظام الإدارة البيئية  ايزو 14001 - لتزويد المنظمات بنهج منظم لضمان الامتثال للوائح القانونية والتحسين المستمر.
