Elaine Evans was eighteen when her life changed drastically. On her eighteenth birthday, her older sister's ex-boyfriend, Cole, sexually assaulted her when her older sister, Greta Evans, was at work. Due to the trauma, Elaine shuts herself off by developing a child-like personality. Wanting to give Elaine a better life, Greta broke up with Cole, and the two sisters left the apartment and ran away.

On the road, Greta went on several websites to look for jobs to support herself and Elaine. To their relief, Greta found a job opening for a Nanny position in England, where a wealthy family would pay for her and Elaine's flights so they could live in their home. She took the job hoping Elaine could have a friend, even if it were a child.
