Born the youngest daughter of Charles I, Duke of Bourbon, Constance of Bourbon grows up amidst comfort and splendour on her powerful family's estates in France. A shy child, she prefers her prayers and pearls to the hefty politics her Father and brothers have no choice but to partake in but war will reach into her life quicker than she could ever know....

Across the sea, in England, the Wars of the Roses rages, a bloody battle for the throne between the royal Houses of York and Lancaster where a word weighs as much as the swing of a sword.

Amidst it all, stands Edward of York, the handsome eldest son to the Duke of York, a young knight, eager to fight but forced to flee England in 1459 when the Lancastrian King and Queen overpower his family forces at Ludlow Castle. With his Neville cousins (one being the infamous Earl of Warwick) Edward sails to France where Warwick begins his plots to regain the House of York power.

It is as a result of these plots, Edward and Constance are destined to meet. Worlds apart, they will be matched for the benefit of others but when tragedy strikes at the very heart of the House of York, forcing Edward closer to the throne than ever, they find they are, perhaps, what each other needs.

Amongst the tangled nest of vipers, surrounded by bloodied thorns, will they keep the crowns destiny calls for them to claim?

Elisabetta "Eliza" de' Medici is only 13 years old when she becomes one of the most important people in Europe. The death of her mother leaves her the heir apparent to the Duchy of Burgundy, and her father's inability to care for her after the death of his beloved wife makes her future uncertain. Many see the young Eliza as a pawn for political gain, but the strategic, smart, and compassionate girl is determined to make her own way in the world. Eliza is forced to confront reality however, when her father's parenting incapacity convinces him to send his daughter to England under the care of her great uncle, King Henry VI, and his wife, Queen Margaret of Anjou, where she is quickly made the heir to the throne by the childless couple. Doted on by the queen, and cared for by a distant cousin Jacquetta Woodville, Eliza comes to consider England her home and begins to love the people she will one day rule over. Everything changes just a few months later when King Henry falls ill with a serious illness. When the physicians claim insanity a new faction, one that is against her great aunt to the queen, take power. The new faction, the York's, quickly separate Eliza from the people she has come to consider her family as the king and queen are moved into virtual exile at Windsor Castle during his illness and Eliza is left in the care of people that she neither knows nor trusts. As Eliza is tossed into this complicated new world she must learn to navigate her feelings and decide her loyalties as her love for a certain York Earl and what she feels is best for the country, collide with the love of the family that she has known and the loyalties of her past.

Hatred between the two countries runs deeper than the channel rarely separating them from each others throats but nevertheless the cunning King Louis accepts the pact sealed by the marriage of his eldest daughter, Princess Geneviève of France, to King Edward's youngest brother - Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Haughty, vain, almost fanatical in her piety and trained to bear a crown, Geneviève has no love for her English neighbours and favours other candidates for her illustrious hand but nevertheless is thrust into the heart of the Wars of the Roses with few allies and a husband she quickly resents. Trapped in the land of the enemy where knives are readily drawn in the marriage bed, Geneviève must learn to survive using her beauty, wit and political guile to master the game of smoke and mirrors the English and French so love to play. Bound to the tumultuous heart of fifteenth century England, can Geneviève endure against the ever changing tide of the cousin's war and campaigns waged between wilful women with words no less sharp than their men's swords? How far is she willing to go for the power she craves, the position she believes God desires for her? And when rebellion rears its head against her new kin, which way will her loyalties lie and how long will they endure?

"I beg your forgiveness, My prince. I did not mean to offend you by accepting your brother's invitation to dance." I swallowed hard, trying to fight the lump of fear that had started to build in my throat, "I did not think I was allowed to decline." Prince Thomas let out a little chuckle, "Oh, I am not mad at you, Emma." I shivered when my name left his lips, "You have just piqued my interest, that is all."
