Just when they were finally happy, it had to happen.
What they found felt like the end of the world, and for him maybe it was.
Sonic had a tumor.
There was no getting around that fact, not matter how much he wished it not.

The signs were clear as day. Heck even the person Sonic's in love with knew Sonic was in love. The only problem? No one knew who Sonic was in love with.
