I Lied

"How does it feel, my dear? Losing the best thing that has ever happened to you."

The words stung on my tongue but I kept the tilted smile. Why didn't he run?Why?! I wanted to slap some sense into him and cry shaking his shoulders. But I can't.

I inched closer, just so he's the only one to hear. His eyes looked past me in the thin air and I knew I can't risk a hint.

" If you fight , half your people die. Starting with that one."
I pointed my chin in Tara's direction.

Two hours later when the meadow was empty with burned tents flying as swirls of ash , I retreated to the shadows of the trees forcing myself to keep breathing the heaviness on my chest.

How could this all repeat.

" Oh God", I whispered , closing my eyes as pain swept my body. Something inside me was broken. Everything inside me was broken.
