Did he actually love her? Only for his needs. 
Why is this about a toxic relationship? It is based on it because we are getting into toxic relationships every single day, without knowing it. But this is a really toxic one, to the point it is obsessive, stalkerish and manipulative. Not really good, so here you go if you want to be cautious.
