The mission - colonize the slopes of Olympus Mons on Mars before the Pacific Alliance lands.
The challenge - something isn't quite right with the site foreseen for the colony. Explorations reveal a cave where the support struts for the home dome are supposed to go.
It gets worse - not only does the cave move, but it contains the impossible: a human skeleton. And there's a writing on the wall.
What starts off odd, soon descends into total madness.
But the next shuttle back to Earth doesn't launch until next year.
ONC Prompt 59. The year is 2042. The first astronauts landed on mars. They find a cave with a single human skeleton and four words written on the wall.

Do your genes, your parents, teachers, or your master determine who you will be in life? Can they set your value in the universe? 650 years ago the known species of the universe came together and signed the Alliance, a document that would help each race find its place in the universe. It granted freedom to some and the scant protection of slavery to others. Into this society a handful of children are born who will change it forever, if they can survive to adulthood. Here is the origin story of two of those children. Hathu is born to a man determined to make the universe bow to him and his species. Since he learned to talk, Hathu has been a disappointment to his father. He doesn't want to become a warrior, and he refuses to assert his dominance. When he accidentally overhears his father plotting against the Ir'Klahn empire, can Hathu stop him? Mik is born with no rights, destined to become a lifelong slave. His mother tries to protect him from this fate by running away and finding a home for them on a trading ship that travels from world to world. They are safe for now, but how long can they hide from the best trackers in the universe? This is the first book in the My Kingdom Come series. Updates every Tuesday. :) My 2021 Nanowrimo so please excuse the unedited condition of the story. Be warned: there is violence, rape, murder, abuse, self harm and suicidal thoughts in this story. Life On This Planet: Book 1

20 parts Complete

By 2422, humankind has achieved an ecotopian climate-positive future. There's zero conflict and zero waste throughout the whole world. But, when a young girl starts having mysterious visions of a walled city, it might signal the ancient return of something threatening this ideal. Can humans escape their nature, or will they return to their old patterns and behaviours? Zee, a quiet and industrious young girl, begins to have vivid dreams and visions of a walled city and a mysterious red book when she turns fifteen. She embarks on a dangerous training programme, meeting other teenagers from around the planet, navigating deep sea trenches, black holes, and a new romance whilst trying to uncover an ancient mystery surrounding quantum entanglement. Will she solve it to save her pet squid and the planet? When millions of Earth's populations left four hundred years ago seeking a new planet to colonise, it paved the way for Earth to stabilise and thrive. But what happened to those people? Why has there been no contact? Are the visions sent from the ancient humans who left planet Earth? Zee quickly learns that her newfound independence is not without its challenges. Some of which might not be from this planet.
