Danny has never not known something. Ever.
He always knows the answers, or at least where to find out. Which is why he was utterly terrified when he realized he was confused. Sure, he has immense powers that haven't been seen in centuries. And sure, other people are usually deathly afraid of people with his powers. But that doesn't mean that he shouldn't know what to do, right?
The thing is, he's clueless here. Which isn't usually a good thing when immense power is involved, but what's a terrified teenage boy to do? In Danny's case, he makes a decision that's great theoretically, but not so much when he sees the results firsthand. He chooses to hide his power.
In any other world that might work really well. But in one where literally everyone has powers... Well, it just looks strange for him to be lacking them.
However Danny is pretty smart, and manages to work the powerless act pretty well. Which is pretty impressive all things considered.
But then the pain starts. Horrible, gut-wrenching, ripping pain that lashes him from the inside out; a result of keeping his power locked up for so long. Now, it want's out.
And for the second time ever, Danny has no idea what to do.
