This book follows an African American boy as he wonders over into the white community something not usually done. Considering that during the year 1830's New York was severely divided into pocket communities helping keep the oppressed oppressed, since they would live in cramped apartment buildings with other families while the rich lived in manors. While the immigrants worked in factories the rich turned towards investments. Matthews~ (African American) 6 years old and on the street. I watch the other children get handed bread. I watch them get taken into the homes made for children like us. My clothes are tattered and torn. I go to bed underneath boxes or in garbage cans to stay warm. Annabelle~ 20 years old, the daughter of a noble getting ready for another social event. I walk with the other women who are ahead of me. They are giggling and talking about the recent engagements, the recent social gatherings, the recent investments that potential suitors have made, yet I am simply not interested. I would rather get a job. I want to get down and dirty. Daniel~ 21 years old, a nobleman that owns quite a few acres of land for farming. Father finally died. Leaving the estate to me. I will now be able to rent out the land instead of having father put outrageous buying prices on the damn property. No one can afford them in today's day in age. Not to mention that once the property is divided up into the sectors with their own little cottages we could have our own little self-sufficient economy if I play my cards right. No, my father ever the man he was decided it was too much of a risk. Well you can roll over in your grave. I never did like him. *Warning: There may be some harsh scenes while Matthews are on the streets, and scenes that deal with death. *please I wrote this story at 16/17. I'm 28 and I crying because I would rewrite this in a heartbeat especially coz I sound crazy* so read with caution* I fell in love. I fell in love with a fairytale. Oh Yes I did. You know that one story that gives every little girl hope out there that good things comes to those who wait even in rare but simple gems like a glass slipper. This hope carried me far and beyond. It's a fairytale that is relatable to any prospect of life. There will be your evil stepmother and evil stepsisters, your fairy godmother and your one true prince. It is a fairytale that understands the element of surprise: That what we seek can sometimes appear right in front of us without knocking on our doors. Most especially, it's a fairytale that understand the importance of love: A true prince may not come in shape of perfection but regardless of the imperfections and flaws, he would still remain perfect in your eyes. Regardless of its flaws, Africa was my father and Nigeria was my prince. Africa was my birthplace, born to the greatest warriors on the planet: Shaka Zulu, Nelson Mandela, Cleopatra, Kofi Annan even Didier Drogba the famous footballer. Most especially it was my home. Anyone can love someone who doing and saying all the right things, being everything you want and need, when they're got it all together and it all figured it out. But, to love someone at their lowest, to love someone despite how broken they feel, when they're lost, when you're willing to stand by them no matter how challenging or difficult things may be, that kind of love is a lot more beautiful. That kind of love is a lot more meaningful. Thank you for loving me both times when things are good and bad, up and down. "I was born on June 22nd, 1947 on the wet warm soil of Anniston, Alabama. Where the climate was equivalent to a steaming pot on a stove." ... "Alabama a South state that was segregated while I was being called a gentleman..." ... "You have to break train tracks, to form a way to justice..." .... I scan her face she looks about the same age as me, plus her fingers had blisters and spicy marks on them. I squint my eyes from the blazing sun picking a dandelion embedded into the soil feeling the slimy texture of the stem on my fingers. "You're playing with dandelions, huh?" ... A story that tells about a boy who grew up in the South witnessing the cruelty of his friends. Having to witness society on the injustices of people who doesn't look like him. A girl who's unable to go anywhere she pleases, facing the mistreatment of people who doesn't look like herself. Until they met each other... Note: There are grammar errors in this book.
