Pushed Away

This is a Shane x OC fanfic!
The OC, Mills, is a gender-neutral character. As such, Mills will be addressed as they/them throughout the story. Don't like that? Don't read it.
I decided to go the Neutral route with Mills since in the game you can be either male or female and date/marry whomever you want. And I know people of all genders play the game, so I wanted to be inclusive as possible.

Mills moves to Pelican Town, leaving their old city life behind. It's quite the adjustment for them, but they believe it'll be worth while. Despite having no knowledge of farming. The luckiest they ever were with a plant was an aloe an old friend bought for them. (We don't talk about how it was a plastic plant.)

The real challenge came with the townspeople. Or specifically one person. The scruffy looking man who sulked in the bar every night. He was as rude as one could get. Mills didn't know what the hell his problem was, and was content to never find out. Or so they thought.

Curiosity plagued them, and Mills decided to push it. Will they break through Shane's shell, allowing him to find a sense of security? Or will Mills crash and burn, left with a broken heart and a feeling of guilt?
