Sauron is practically in control of Middle Earth. Only a few hideouts and a few places he hasn't bothered to meddle with are still not patrolled by orcs.
Aragorn, known by most as Strider, found the Ring on one of his travels and brought it to Rivendell. But Sauron sensed it and sends armies to attack the strongholds. There is nothing for the Fellowship to do but flee
