Kimoni Fulford is cursed. Not because the captain of her ship is incompetent, or because her nationalist ex-best friend is a pirate hunter after her head. Not even because as a water witch, rival pirate crews have been trying to kidnap her. She is literally cursed. By the dead heir herself.

Curse breaker Mara Reade is the bastard princess. Adored, beloved, but ultimately illegitimate. No claim to the throne of the country she loves. When her half-sister, Heir-Apparent Princess Josephine, goes missing her parents blame pirates. But she knows there's more to the story. If she doesn't find her, her kingdom goes to her power-hungry cousin, Serena. And that is not a fate she can bear.

A pirate born and a pirate made create a vow forged by half-truths. Kimoni will aid Mara in finding her sister. Mara will break Kimoni's curse. And nothing, absolutely nothing, will go wrong.

We Burn Our Cages is a sapphic princess x pirate, with the main characters based on the infamous pirate duo Anne Bonney and Mary Reade. Events in this story include highly fictionalized, highly dramatized, historically inaccurate retellings of their lives together, as pirates.
