Claire's heart stuttered. Her knuckles clenched around her plate, so hard they were surely turning the same shade her face was.

Deep breaths, she thought. The firmness of it sounded very much like Jess, surprisingly, considering what was happening at the current moment. It was okay. She had made a plan.

She unstiffened her limbs and casually entered the room, sitting down at the table. As she did, she asked, "Now what's this I hear about a strange fire?"
