In Donum, the good and worthy people pray to receive one of 6 magical gifts from the spirits, and if they're goodly enough and worthy enough, they might get one on the first day of the new year. They believe their land to be blessed with magic to guide them toward prosperity, longevity, and happiness. They believe their good magic overpowers the Dark gifts the vengeful spirits bestow to restore order.

Claudia hates the magic. She never wanted the twisted power she has over everyone. She's given up her chance for romance in exchange for a real relationship with her mother, and she's resigned to live a quiet and lonely existence with her books.
